Channa Dal Ladoo is an all time favorite sweet, which is made in almost all regions of India with subtle variations. It is also considered a very festive sweet and made during most festive occasions. These ladoos can be made either from Freshly Roasted Channa Dal or from Besan (Gram Flour). The aroma when mixed with ghee gives a special flavor and richness to this ladoo. This recipe uses channa dal, but besan (gram flour) can also be used. Follow the same procedure when making this ladoo with besan.

Channa Dal Ladoo

Ingredients

  • 1 cup channa dal
  • 3/4 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon cardamom powder
  • 2 tablespoons ghee
  • 1 tablespoon chopped pistachios for garnish

Method
Roast the channa dal until it releases the roasted aroma and slightly changes its color. Powder it.

Mix the roasted powderedd channa dal, powdered sugar. cardamom powder and ghee. Knead using your hands until it holds into a ball of mass. The heat in your hands help all the ingredients get together.

Now roll them into lemon size balls and garnish them with pisatachios. Can be stored in an air tight container for a few days and longer in the refridgerator.

Hi Megha - same propotion for besan. I cup besan. But roast it well till you notice a nice aroma being released. you can also made it with yellow moong dal as Pallavi Suggested. it is more healthier as well. Let me know if u face any problems.

Yes you can roast the besan powder, but it yields a different taste. Try it, experimentation leads to interesting results. But try adjusting the ghee a little. Hope it helps.

Have to recount a memory from our days at Sacred Heart High School in Amritsar. Tuck would come for the Punjabi kids in the hostel. Most parents would send Besan ke laddoos and we would get to taste these when friends shared. What a heavenly taste of childhood! Thanks!

Firslty, your site is fantastic and so easy for someone like me who can barely cook!

A quick question - for the besan ladoo, i replace channa dal with besan? Also have to make about 20-25 pieces, how will the ingredients mix change? I have the party tomm evening :)

Thank you for your warm comments. When using besan, roast the besan along with one tablespoon of ghee until it looks like coarse crumbs on low-medium heat taking care not to burn it. Once cool, add the remaining ingredients and stir. Add one teaspoon of ghee to start and knead with your hands. The warmth in your hands will hold the besan together adding too much ghee can also make it soggy. But if it does go soggy, no frets, just keep it in the fridge to harden. And it tastes just as good. I hope this helps and let me know how it turned out. 1 cup of besan would yield about 15 ladoos of 1 inch diameter (Approx).
