What better way to reuse some left over lentil cakes (Idli's), then crumble coarsely and spice it up with some green chillies and sour it up with some lemon. Another art in south is to reuse the leftovers to make a tasty snack and this is the ever popular among the quick dishes you can make, provided you have those idli's ready and about a day old.

Idli Upma

Serves: 4

Ingredients

  • 10-12 Left over idli's (about a day old) - Coarsely broken/Crumbled
  • 1/2 cup chopped onions
  • 1/2 teaspoons mustard seeds
  • 1/2 teaspoon half urad dal
  • 1 teaspoon chopped green chillies
  • 1 teaspoon finely chopped ginger
  • 4-5 curry leaves finely chopped
  • 1/4 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon Sesame oil (or Vegetable oil)
  • 1 tablespoon finely chopped coriander leaves
  • Salt to taste

Method

Heat oil in a frying pan; add the mustard seeds, cumin seeds and urad dal. Allow them to crackle.

Add the onions, saute until onions are soft and tender on medium heat. Now add the curry leaves, green chillies and ginger. Add the turmeric powder and the crumbled idlis, salt, lemon juice and saute until all the ingredients are well mixed and coated.

Stir for a few more minutes and turn off heat. Garnish with coriander leaves and serve at breakfast or tea or as a snack in the box.
