Each region and person has a recipe. I would suggest, follow mine as a basic and add some sauteed onions, cumin etc. Typically this chutney is without any oil and is also considered healthy. Good luck and hope you succeed in getting the right recipe. :-)

I tried this chutney from a jar bought at the grocery store, but a lady I know makes it with some other ingredients, it has a taste of onion, cummin and curry leaves, its also got oil. Would like to know how exactly its made, she will not give the recipe as she sells it, its her secret I guess.

If you use tamarind paste, add 1 tablespoon to start with and then alter to your taste. I hope this helps.

Hi Archana.. Lovely recipes :-) Tamarind - if I use tamarind paste - the concentrated one, does it still need 1/4 cup?

I don't really like tamarind and date but since a lot of people are saying that this is really good, I might as well try tasting this one.

Thanks Mrs Ahamed, adding sauf is a good idea and I am sure it would have added a lot of flavor, I will make changes to reflect in the recipe as well.
