The dish is nothing but an assorted fruit salad with pineapple, mango and grapes that is tossed with a ground coconut mixture and topped with some tempered mustard seeds and curry leaves. You can add any vegetables of your choice but make sure it has to be quite firm and not over ripened.

In Konkani, Avnas refers to pineapple and “Ambe” is the ripened mango. It is commonly prepared during the summer season, when fruits are the essential part of refreshments and mangoes are in season.

Ingredients

  • 1 Pineapple , chopped into medium cubes
  • 1 Mango (Ripe) , chopped into medium cubes
  • 1 cup Green Grapes
  • Ingredients to grind
  • 4 tablespoon Fresh coconut
  • 1 Dry Red Chilli
  • 1 teaspoon Jaggery
  • 1 teaspoon Mustard seeds (Rai/ Kadugu)
  • To temper
  • 1 teaspoon Mustard seeds (Rai/ Kadugu)
  • 1 sprig Curry leaves
  • Oil , for cooking 

How to make Konkani Style Avnas Ambe Sasam Recipe-Fruit Salad with Coconut

  1. To begin making the Konkani Style Avnas Ambe Sasam Recipe-Fruit Salad with Coconut chop all the fruits and keep it ready.

  2. Grind coconut, jaggery, mustard seeds, and dry red chillies to a coarse mixture.

  3. Heat a kadai with oil, add the ground coconut mixture and add chopped pineapple. Mix well to combine.

  4. Add chopped mangoes and grapes and turn off the heat. Toss the fruits well with the ground masala.

  5. To temper, heat a small kadai with oil, add mustard seeds and let them splutter, add the curry leaves and crackle them for 2 seconds and pour the tempering over the fruit salad and serve.
