“Iniya Tamil Puthandu Nalvazhthukkal” to all the readers as April 14 of this year is marked to be the new beginnings to all the people who live in Tamil Nadu, Pondicherry and Tamilians in Sri Lanka. Tamil New Year known as “Puthandu” in Tamil language is the first day of the year in Tamil Calendar. “Chithirai Matham” also called as the beginning of the month in Tamil is what they look forward according to the Gregorian calendar. 

 The celebration for this day starts with a huge and colorful kolams that are drawn outside at each of their houses. Then the ladies of the household begin to arrange a variety of fruits, flower, and vegetable and clean rice in front of their God, as a sign of offering and belief that everything is going to be a new beginning to their life. Then people wear new clothes and exchange greetings as well to one another.

The happiness of this celebration is divinely celebrated in the temples all over Tamil Nadu. Devotees from all over the state visit temples to witness the God on this auspicious day to temples like “Meenakshi Temple” in Madurai, “Kapaleeshwarar Temple in Chennai, Vinayagar Temple in Pondicherry, etc.

The celebration not just stops there but it continues to a nice and elaborate feast. The most common dishes that are to be made during this festival is the “Manga Pachadi” which is nothing but raw mango in yogurt gravy. Then there are a variety of starters like the “Masala Vada” which is accompanied by the most favorite sweet among the tamilians called the “Payasam”.  Then the main course are usually steamed rice with vegetable dal and a simple rasam.
