Nankhatai is an authentic Indian shortbread biscuit which is very popular in India as well as in Pakistan. Nan Khatai can be easily prepared at home with the available ingredients like refined flour, gram flour, sugar, ghee and is flavoured with green cardamom powder and pistachios.

Serve Nankhatai with hot Masala Chai as a tea time snack. It is also a great dish to serve to your guests for a tea party.

  • 1 cup All Purpose Flour (Maida)
  • 2 tablespoons Gram flour (besan)
  • 2 tablespoons Sooji (Semolina/ Rava)
  • 1/2 teaspoon Baking powder
  • 1/2 cup Ghee
  • 2 tablespoons Curd (Dahi / Yogurt)
  • 3/4 cup Caster Sugar
  • 1 teaspoon Cardamom (Elaichi) Pods/Seeds , powdered
  • 2 tablespoons Pistachios , chopped

How to make Authentic Nankhatai Recipe - A Delicious Indian Cookie

  1. To begin with Authentic Nankhatai, preheat the oven to 180 degrees C.

  2. Into a food processor combine refined flour, gram flour, semolina, cardamom powder and baking powder.

  3. Cream together the ghee, yogurt and sugar until well blended. Add more yogurt if required to make a dough like consistency.

  4. Refrigerator the Nankhatai dough for at least half an hour

  5. Remove the Nankhatai dough from fridge and make small sized balls, press each ball between your palms lightly.

  6. Using a sharp knife draw a tic-tac design on the top and put chopped pistachio press them into the dough gently.

  7. Put the balls on a greased baking tray and bake at 180 degrees C for 12-15 minutes or until the Nankhatai are lightly golden brown.

  8. Serve Authentic Nankhatai with hot Masala Chai during tea time breaks. It is also a great dish to serve to your guests.
