Xacuti is a rich coconut curry, served with classic Goan red rice. The very first bite will transport you to Goan meals by the beach, with the wind in your hair and the sounds of the waves crashing onto the shore.

Needless to say, every family has their favourite version and this is ours. So, play some Remo, pour yourself a feni and sit yourself down to one of the finest examples of Goan cuisine. That’s my dad’s version of a perfect Sunday lunch.

Serve Chicken Xacuti along with some steamed rice for a perfect weekday meal.

  • 1 kg Chicken
  • 2 Onions , cut into chunks
  • 2 Potatoes (Aloo) , cubed (optional)
  • 10 Curry leaves
  • 3 tablespoons Cooking oil
  • For the Masala
  • 1 cup Fresh coconut , grated
  • 4 cloves Garlic
  • 1/2 inch Ginger , garted
  • 1/2 Onion , finely sliced
  • 6 Kashmiri dry red chillies
  • 1/2 teaspoon Cloves (Laung)
  • 1 teaspoon Turmeric powder (Haldi)
  • 8 Whole Black Peppercorns
  • 1 teaspoon Cumin seeds (Jeera)
  • 1/4 teaspoon Methi Seeds (Fenugreek Seeds)
  • 1 teaspoon Fennel seeds (Saunf)
  • 2 inch Cinnamon Stick (Dalchini)
  • 1 tablespoon Poppy seeds
  • 1 tablespoon Coriander (Dhania) Seeds
  • 1/2 teaspoon Sesame seeds (Til seeds)
  • Salt , to taste

How to make Chicken Xacuti Recipe - Goan Chicken Curry

  1. To begin making the Chicken Xacuti recipe, In a wide pan, heat 1 teaspoon oil & toast the coconut till light brown. Keep aside.

  2. In the same pan, fry the onion, garlic & ginger for about 2-3 minutes. Keep aside. Fry all the remaining spices -  chillies, cloves, turmeric, peppercorns, cumin, fenugreek seeds,  fennel seeds, cinnamon, poppy seeds, coriander seeds, sesame seed, salt to tasteuntil well toasted (about 3-4 minutes).

  3. Transfer the coconut, toasted spices and the onion-ginger-garlic into a blender. Adding a few tablespoons of water at a time, blend this to a fine paste. It should feel smooth and like velvet.

  4. Next heat 2 tablespoons of oil, add curry leaves, and let them splutter. Add the chopped onion and potatoes & sauté till the onion is lightly pink.

  5. Add the chicken and sauté for about 5 minutes. Add the spice paste with a little water, cook till the chicken is done. This will take a good 15-18 minutes. 

  6. Add a squeeze of lime juice just before serving and serve hot.

  7. Serve Chicken Xacuti along with some steamed rice for a perfect weekday meal.
