Ingredients

  • 2 cups Rice , cooked
  • 2 Tomatoes , finely chopped
  • 1 Onion , thinly sliced
  • 1 teaspoon Red Chilli powder
  • 1 Green Chilli , slit
  • Mint Leaves (Pudina) , fistful, roughly chopped
  • Coriander (Dhania) Leaves , small bunch, finely chopped
  • 1 Cinnamon Stick (Dalchini)
  • 2 Cloves (Laung)
  • 1 sprig Curry leaves
  • 1 tablespoon Ghee
  • Salt , to taste
  • To grind to a coarse mix using a mortar and pestle
  • 1 inch Ginger , roughly chopped
  • 3 to 4 cloves Garlic
  • 1 teaspoon Fennel seeds (Saunf)

How to make Chettinad Takkali Sadam Recipe (Chettinad Style Tomato Rice)

  1. To begin making Chettinad Takkali Sadam Recipe, cook the rice to a fluffy texture and keep aside.

  2. Also, coarsely pound the ginger, garlic and fennel seeds using a mortar and pestle and keep aside.

  3. Heat ghee in a pan on medium flame, add the cinnamon stick and cloves and let it splutter.

  4. Add the ginger, garlic and fennel seeds mix and saute until the raw smell goes away.

  5. Add the curry leaves and sliced onions and saute until the onions turn translucent.

  6. Add the tomatoes and saute until its half cooked.

  7. Now, add the slit green chilli, red chilli powder, mint and coriander leaves and mix well.

  8. Season with salt and cook the mix until the tomatoes are well cooked and the whole mixture comes together. This will take around 10 minutes.

  9. Now, add the cooked rice and mix it evenly using a fork.

  10. Let it simmer for 5 minutes and switch off the flame.

  11. Serve the Chettinad Takkali Sadam Recipe along with Cauliflower & Cucumber Raita Recipe (Cauliflower Yogurt Salad) for lunch or for kids lunchbox.
