Mumbai Style Bhel Puri recipe is a simple and fast snack made from puffed rice combined with a variety of raw salad ingredients. Bhel Puri is most often made with just basic ingredients like tomatoes, potatoes, cucumber, onions, some chutneys, sev and papdi. Puffed Rice is also called as mumra or moodi or pori in different parts of india can be combined with a variety of ingredients making it tangy and spicy.

Bhel puri was originally a Gujarati fast food now synonymous as Indian street food. Bhel puri is best consumed as soon as it is made. If left for a while, the juices from the tomatoes, chutneys, etc. combine to render the sev and puffed rice soggy. Much of the fun of eating Bhel Puri is in the crunchiness.

Serve the Bhel Puri along with a Dahi Gujiya Recipe as a tea time evening snack for the weekends. It can even make a quick and light weeknight dinner.

  • 4 cups Puffed rice
  • 100 grams Sev
  • 100 grams Papdi puris , (you can also add in some ready made mixture)
  • 2 Onion , finely chopped
  • 2 Tomato , finely chopped
  • 2 Green Chillies , finely chopped
  • 1 Cucumber , peeled and finely chopped
  • 1 Potatoes (Aloo) , boiled, peeled and cubed
  • 1/4 cup Anardana Powder (Pomegranate Seed Powder)
  • 1/4 cup Mango (Raw) , finely chopped
  • 4 tablespoons Roasted Peanuts (Moongphali) , crushed
  • 4 tablespoons Green Chutney (Coriander & Mint)
  • 4 tablespoons Sweet Chutney (Date & Tamarind)
  • 1 tablespoon Chaat Masala Powder
  • Salt , to taste
  • 2 sprig Coriander (Dhania) Leaves , chopped

How to make Bhel Puri Recipe - An Indian Street Food & Tea Time Snack

  1. To begin making the Bhel Puri Recipe, first get all the ingredients ready.

  2. Prepare the Green ChutneyDate Tamarind Chutney and keep them aside.

  3. Boil the potatoes in a pressure cooker, peel and cut the poatatoes and  keep them aside.

  4. You can pre make all the ingredients and keep them ready and stir them together when you are ready to serve the bhel puri.

  5. When you are ready to serve the Bhel Puri, in a large mixing bowl, add all the dry ingredients first, then the cut vegetables and finally the chutneys. Toss them well in the bowl until combined. 

  6. Check the taste of the Bhel Puri and adjust the salt and spices accordingly.

  7. Serve the Bhel Puri along with a Dahi Gujiya Recipe as a tea time evening snack for the weekends.
