Papads in Tamarind Gravy is an easy curry which can be prepared when you run out of vegetables yet require some spicy curry for your white rice. This curry is prepared similarly to the regular vatha kuzhambhu with papads. Papads are roasted in oil and then cooked with tamarind based curry and spices. This simple curry tastes delicious with white rice and adds a spoonful of gingelly oil to make it better. 

Prepare Appalam Vathal Kuzhambhu and serve it with Steamed Rice, Corn and Onion Raita and Elai Vadam for an easy delicious lunch.

Ingredients

  • 3 Papads
  • Tamarind , lemon size
  • 1-1/2 teaspoon Gingelly oil
  • 1 teaspoon Sambar Powder
  • 1 teaspoon Red chilli powder , adjust according to your desire
  • 1/4 teaspoon Turmeric powder (Haldi)
  • 1/4 teaspoon Methi Seeds (Fenugreek Seeds)
  • 1/4 teaspoon Mustard seeds
  • 3 Dry red chillies
  • Asafoetida (hing) , a pinch
  • 3 cups Water , adjust the consistency of curry according to you
  • 4 Curry leaves
  • Salt , as needed
  • Jaggery , a pinch or sugar

How to make Appalam Vathal Kuzhambhu Recipe (Papad In Tamarind Gravy)

  1. To begin making the Appalam Vathal Kuzhambhu recipe, heat oil in a non-stick kadai.

  2. Once the oil is hot, add mustard seeds, fenugreek seeds, curry leaves and dried red chilies. Allow it to splutter.

  3. Meanwhile, in a small bowl, add a cup of water and soak tamarind in it for about 5 to 10 minutes. Extract tamarind juice from it and discard the pulp.

  4. Break papads and slide them into the oil. Fry for about a minute.

  5. Add sambar powder, red chilli powder, turmeric powder and salt to the tamarind water. Mix them well.

  6. Now, pour the tamarind extract to the papads and bring them to boil.

  7. Reduce the heat and cook the curry in low flame until the oil separates on the sides and required consistency is reached.

  8. Add jaggery and combine them well. Sprinkle asafoetida and remove the curry from the flame. Let it rest until it is served.

  9. Prepare Appalam Vathal Kuzhambhu and serve it with Steamed RiceCorn and Onion Raita and Elai Vadam for an easy delicious lunch.
