  • 1 cup Basmati rice
  • 3 tablespoons Ghee
  • 1 Bay leaf (tej patta)
  • 1 inch Cinnamon Stick (Dalchini)
  • 1 teaspoon Cumin seeds (Jeera)
  • 4 Cloves (Laung)
  • 2 Dry Red Chillies , broken
  • 1 Brown cardamom (Badi Elaichi)
  • 1 tablespoon Whole Black Peppercorns
  • 1 Onion , thinly sliced
  • 1 inch Ginger , finely chopped
  • 4 cloves Garlic , finely chopped
  • 2 Tomatoes , finely chopped
  • 1/2 teaspoon Turmeric powder (Haldi)
  • 1 teaspoon Coriander (Dhania) Powder
  • 1 teaspoon Kashmiri Red Chilli Powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon Garam masala powder
  • 1/2 cup Curd (Dahi / Yogurt)
  • 1 cup Green peas (Matar)
  • 1/4 cup Coriander (Dhania) Leaves , finely chopped
  • Salt , to taste

How to make Matar Ki Tehri Recipe - Fragrant Rice with Spices and Fresh Peas | Easy Indian Rice Dish

  1. To begin making Matar Ki Tehri, prep all the ingredients and keep ready

  2. Rinse the basmati rice under cold water until the water runs clear. Soak it in water for 20 minutes, then drain and keep aside.

  3. Heat ghee or oil in a large pot. Add cumin seeds and all the spices from bay leaves, cinnamom, cloves, cardamom, badi elaichi and let them splutter and the aromas come through.

  4. Add finely chopped onions, ginger and garlic to the pot and sauté until golden brown.

  5. Mix in chopped tomatoes, turmeric powder, coriander powder, red chili powder, and salt. Cook until tomatoes soften and ghee starts to separate.

  6. Add fresh green peas and stir. Then, add the drained rice and mix well to coat the rice with the spices.

  7. Pour in yogurt and 1-1/4 cups water, stirring to combine.

  8. Close the lid of the cooking pot simmer for about 20 minutes in a pot until the Matar Ki Tehri is cooked and water is absorbed.

  9.  Once the Matar Ki Tehri cooked, fluff the rice gently with a fork and garnish with chopped fresh coriander leaves.
